I devoutly adore you

Adoro te devote

Αυτή η προσευχή δεν έχει ακόμη μεταφραστεί στη γλώσσα σας· εμφανίζεται στα αγγλικά. Το Πνεύμα την ακούει έτσι κι αλλιώς.

I devoutly adore you, hidden Deity, truly hidden beneath these appearances. My whole heart submits to you, for in contemplating you it fails entirely. Sight, touch and taste are deceived in you, but what is heard is safely believed. I believe whatever the Son of God has said: nothing is truer than this word of Truth. On the Cross only the divinity was hidden; here the humanity is hidden as well. Yet believing and confessing both, I ask what the repentant thief asked. I do not see the wounds as Thomas did, yet I confess you to be my God. Make me believe you ever more, hope in you, and love you. O memorial of the death of the Lord, living bread that gives life to man, grant that my soul may live on you, and that you may always taste sweet to me. Amen.

Στα λατινικά

Adóro te devóte, latens Déitas, quæ sub his figúris vere látitas: tibi se cor meum totum súbiicit, quia te contémplans totum déficit. Visus, tactus, gustus in te fállitur, sed audítu solo tuto créditur: credo quidquid dixit Dei Fílius; nil hoc verbo veritátis vérius.

Πότε λέγεται αυτή η προσευχή

In adoration, especially at night. Written by St Thomas Aquinas for Corpus Christi in 1264 — the sharpest mind of the Middle Ages, saying that the senses are useless here and only hearing can be trusted.
