Saint Thérèse, little flower, you promised to spend your heaven doing good upon earth, and to let fall a shower of roses. I ask nothing spectacular. Teach me your little way: to do small things with great love, to accept being small, to stop waiting until I am impressive before I begin to be holy. And if what I ask for is according to God's will, send me your sign, and let me recognise it. Amen.

On 1 October, her feast; in a novena of twenty-four days for a sign; and by anyone exhausted by the attempt to be extraordinary. She died at twenty-four, having done nothing the world noticed, and was made a Doctor of the Church.
